Chicago Nutrition - Anti-Aging Vitamin B12 Shots & Injections

Vitamin B 12 is a water-soluble B complex vitamin. Vitamin B12 is found naturally in a variety of foods, including meat, fish and dairy products. It can also be made artificially in a lab. Vitamin B12 is available as a dietary supplement in tablet form or as an injection. Vitamin B 12 is commonly used by physicians to help treat pernicious anemia and Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Some weight-loss clinics offer Vitamin B 12 injections as part of their weight-loss programs. Proponents of Vitamin B12 injections for weight loss say the shots give you more energy and boost your metabolism, helping you shed unwanted pounds. But unless you have a true deficiency, studies have shown that Vitamin B-12 injections aren't likely to give you an energy boost. Getting large amounts of Vitamin B12 through shots isn't likely to harm your health, but it can interfere with the effectiveness of some medications, so be careful and let your doctor know.

If you're hoping to lose weight simply by getting Vitamin B12 injections, please realize that no physicians recommend this without a lifestyle change including exercise and optimizing your nutrition. Quick and easy solutions are not always the most sensible or safe options. Enjoy healthier foods and include physical activity in your daily routine. If you are worried about your vitamin B-12 level, our lab can help you get a blood test to actually verify what your Vitamin B12 level is in your blood.

Vitamin B12 Injection Information

Cyanocobalamin is a man-made form of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is important for growth, cell reproduction, blood formation, and protein and tissue synthesis.

You should not use this vitamin if you are allergic to cobalt, or if you have Leber's disease. Cyanocobalamin can lead to optic nerve damage (and possibly blindness) in people with Leber's disease.
To treat pernicious anemia, you will have to use this medication on a regular basis for the rest of your life. Not using the medication can lead to irreversible nerve damage in your spinal cord.

Pernicious anemia is also treated with folic acid to help maintain red blood cells. However, folic acid will not treat Vitamin B12 deficiency and will not prevent possible damage to the spinal cord. Take all of your medications as directed by your doctor.

Your dose needs may change if you become pregnant, if you breast-feed, or if you eat a vegetarian diet. Tell your doctor about any changes in your diet or medical condition.

How frequesntly should I get Vitamin B12 injections?

Depending on whether or not you have a medical condition or are doing this for anti-aging or weight loss reasons, the recommended frequency varies from once a week to once a month.
